Some families decide to conduct a Volunteer Search for their missing loved one.
SUGGESTIONS FOR ORGANIZING A SEARCH:
Check with your Detective that there is not an active search being conducted at the location.
If the search is on private property, ask permission from the owner. Create a list of all volunteers prior to the search. It is ideal to ask for a current ID. Children under the age of 18 should not participate in the searches.
Discuss your plan with your volunteers. Plans will vary depending on the terrain and number of volunteers.
Remind everyone to not touch anything that may be evidence. Instead, turn on location finder on your phone and take a picture. Do not share this picture to social media. This should be shared with law enforcement.
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF A GRID SEARCH:
On a map of the area you plan to search, separate it into grids.
Volunteers should be separated into groups to search the grids.
Go slowly and be aware of your surroundings.
Hand out fliers to people you may come across while you are searching.
SUGGESTED ITEMS FOR VOLUNTEERS TO BRING TO A SEARCH:
First Aid Kit
Shoes that cover your entire foot
Long pants and brightly colored long sleeve shirts or vests
Protective eye wear
Water / food / snacks
Fliers of the missing person
